On the 4-5th April, I travelled down to Austin, Texas to do some exhibition matches and clinics at the Life Time Fitness Centre, whose squash program is run by Don Murphy. His website can be found at www.ozesquash.com which sells a number of squash products.
Day 1 included a few group clinics, then some matches against the best players in Austin. Day 2 included some hits with the sponsors of the event and a junior group clinic. It was a very successful couple of days.
I would like to thank Don and the squash members of Austin for making it a very enjoyable trip.
The recent International Doubles Invitational hosted by Squash England and the National Squash Centre in Manchester, England has served as a major hitout for the leading Commonwealth nations and a key selection event for many of the teams, including Australia before the Commonwealth Games in Delhi later this year. The tour to UK by the Australian Delhi 2010 Shadow Squad is supported by the Australian Commonwealth Games Association.
AUSTRALIAN WOMEN'S RESULTS MEN'S INTERNATIONAL DOUBLES INVITATIONAL
Final CHINAPPA PALLIKAL (IND) Def BROWN URQUHART (AUS) 11/10, 3/11, 11/10
The match was very tight and at 10 all in the third it was anyones match. Donna and I are in good form for the Commonwealth Games.
In the mixed Cameron Pilley and I lost to Jenny Duncalf and James Wilstrop in a close 2/1 match. The English pair easily won the final of the mixed.
It was a long three days but good to get in some practice before the Games in October. Next event will be the Australian Doubles in Ausgust, held i Melbourne.
The quarter final of the KL Open was played on the glass court in Times Square Shopping mall in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. I was scheduled to play world number 1, Nicol David at 9pm but got on court closer to 10pm. I played well in the first two games and was happy with my game plan going in. I was unlucky to lose the first two games, both going to a tie break and having 3 game balls in the second. Unfortunately I lost both and in the 3rd, was off the pace a bit eventually losing 10/12 11/13 1/11. I fly back to New York for a couple of days before flying to Europe for a Commonwealth Games doubles camp xx
First round I was drawn to play Sarah Kippax who qualified for the main draw against Low Wee Wern and Annie Au. After a bit of a defensive start, I was able to get infront and attack and won quite convincingly in 3 sets. I dont think Sarah played her best squash, after already facing her twice this year but I am happy to get through to the quarter finals. Tonight I play Nicol David, world number 1 and winner of last weeks Chennai Open, on the amazing glass court in Times Square shopping mall. Will be tough but I hope I can cause a big upset xx
Donna and I lost a closely contested final against Rachael Grinham and Jenny Duncalf 11/9 9/11 8/11. We came from behind in the first to win and got to 9 all in the second. Our opponents got a jump on us in the third set due to some amazing winners, but we fought back and just missed out. I fly to Malaysia tonight in preparation fro the KL Open. xx
