Greenwich Open 2012 Update

The Greenwich Open first round saw me up against former World Junior Champion, Amanda Sohby. I started off the match well, moving the ball around and keeping the talented American under pressure. I quickly went up 2/0. With nothing to lose, Sohby stepped up her game and went for broke, pulling off some fantastic winners. This continued in the 4th game and I lost a close one, 9/11. The match was taking it's toll on Amanda and I was able to regain control and dominate the last game, winning 11/5.

In the quarter finals, I faced an improving Samantha Teran from Mexico. Again I started the match well, keeping my opponent under pressure and won the first two games easily. The start of the third was tough and I began to tighten up. I lost the variety in my game that I had in the first 2 and began losing confidence. I was hit in the face when my opponent turned on the ball and I had to have a time out to stop the bleeding. The fifth game was close, and in the end, came down to who made the first mistake and unfortunately I came out the loser of the day.

Although a loss is hard, it is a good kick in the butt for me to reassess my thinking on court, especially in the third game. I have learnt a lot of invaluable lessons from this tournament and will take it into the next one in Cleveland, starting on the 29th January.

World Open 2011 2nd Round v Raneem El Weleiley

The 2nd round of the World Open moved to the amazing Luxor Theatre glass court for the top half of the draw. I faced an in form World Number 8, Raneem El Weleiley who recently won the Weymuller Open. I knew this would be tough and in the first game, found myself fighting nerves. This affected me as I was not hitting my length and moving fluently (as fluently as I can move that is ha). This is fatal against a player who hits the ball as well as Raneem and I found myself down a game, 4/11. I regained composure and was able to hit better length and could incorporate my short game which put more pressure on Raneem and forced errors from the Egyptian. I won the next two games 11/7 11/3. It was tight in the 4th game but I tried to force the game too much and hit a few unforced errors and Raneem won 6/11. I came out strong in the 5th gaining a lead of 9/2. I knew Raneem would not give in and I had to win the match instead of waiting for the Egyptian to hit an error, however, it was nerves again that made me play too passive and Raneem was very patient to get back to 8/9. I hit a good winning boast and the following rally hit a winning length to take the final game 11/8.

Tomorrow I play World Number 1, Nicol David in the quarter finals at 6.30pm, so it's a bit of R&R this evening so I can be on top of my game tomorrow night.

World Open 2011 round 1 v Orla Noom

Last night I played Orla Noom in the first round of the World Open, held in Rotterdam, Holland. Playing the local Dutch woman, I definitely had the crowd against me as alot of spectators showed up to support Noom. I was very focussed on what I wanted to do in the match and played well to dominate the T and move Orla around. This strategy paid off and I won the match 11/6 11/5 11/4. I have a day off today as it is a split second round for the women's draw and I will get my first practice today on the glass court in Luxor Theatre. Tomorrow, I play World Number 8, Raneem El Weleiley who has been playing very well. I know I will have to play my best to beat her.

Thanks to everyone for their messages of support. It means alot

Qatar Open withdrawal

Yesterday I was due to play my first round match of the Qatar Open at 7pm. Although feeling fine in the morning, I slowly deteriorated throughout the day with an upset stomach and felt lethargic. In the afternoon, I found it difficult to get off the bathroom floor and at 5.30pm, I asked to see the tournament doctor. I was taken to hospital and after waiting and being sick in the waiting room sink a few times, I finally had my blood pressure and temperature taken, only to be given a ticket for another waiting room. It got to 6.30pm and I decided I wanted to at least try to play my match, so Mohammed and Ahmed raced me back to the hotel to pick up my squash bag and got me to the club with 5 mins to spare before my match. Getting changed in the car, I walked straight on court and decided to take it one game at a time. After losing a close first game 9/11, I decided to keep going and won the second 11/7. In the third I started to feel a bit dizzy and quickly slowed down. I lost the game 5/11 and had to make the decision to stop. With the World Open only 2 weeks away, I thought it was best not to struggle through. The aim now is to get healthy once again and look toward doing well at the World Open in Holland.
